Rescued chihuahua from busy highway reunites with family

A previous story has a happy ending: the tiny dog that was rescued from a busy California highway is finally home safe. Charm, the traffic-dodging rescued Chihuahua, has been reunited with her owners and family after a CHP officer coaxed her to safety using trail mix.

A man and his two young daughters claimed their escape artist canine after adorable photos of the rescue went viral, according to Contra Costa Animal Services. The two-year-old puppy had apparently slipped out of her backyard on May 9 and bolted onto the ever-busy Highway 680 near Walnut Creek. Charm managed to make her way between speeding cars and ended up perched atop a concrete divider in the middle of the highway. It took awhile before the runaway pooch allowed herself to be captured, but she eventually let Contra Costa Animal Services Officer Andrew Tara pick her up and take her back to the shelter.

Animal workers have been bombarded with calls from people hoping to adopt the tan-and-white Chihuahua – whom the shelter volunteers dubbed &ldquo-Freeway&rdquo- – but thankfully the real owners showed up Friday to take their missing dog home. The girls had been using social media to search for Charm and brought a poster-sized thank you card and hugged their pet tight as they greeted Officer Tara.

&ldquo-The reunion was very sweet and everyone was very excited — especially Charm,&rdquo- a message found on the animals services Facebook page said. They added, &ldquo-We are ALL very happy for the family, who have learned a valuable and expensive lesson in pet licensing, microchipping, spaying, good fencing and the power of social media!”
