A california police k-9 survives a bullet to face

Police dogs carry on just as much risk as police officers themselves. And Bruno, the amazing German Shepherd pictured here is no exception. Bruno is expected to remain at the veterinary hospital for the next six weeks after a bullet shattered his lower jaw and tore through his chest. During a confrontation in a California alley late last week a gunman opened fire and a bullet struck Bruno in the face.

As soon as the round was fired the suspect was shot and killed by police. The 7-year-old dog was wounded during the violent ordeal that erupted after probation officers searched an Anaheim when the three men suddenly fled and darted into a nearby alley. One of the men fired at the officers, but no one was hit.

&ldquo-He probably saved three officers&rsquo- lives,&rdquo- Anaheim Police Lieutenant Tim Schmidt told an NBC affiliate. Bruno, one of six dogs in the K-9 unit, was rushed to an emergency vet and underwent surgery, which included doctors removing part of the dog&rsquo-s lung. The initial assessment on Bruno was a 12 hour window on knowing whether or not he&rsquo-d survive.

Bruno is expected to remain at the veterinarian&rsquo-s office for at least six weeks. A Facebook page, Friends of the Anaheim Police K9 Association, was created to collect donations for Bruno&rsquo-s medical bills.

&ldquo-He&rsquo-s like a child for us,&rdquo- Schmidt said. &ldquo-We were very thankful to have him.&rdquo- We sincerely hope that all of you will considering donating to help Bruno. We&rsquo-ll keep you posted on his progress!
