Haiku by cat: sitting by the window is like `cat tv`

We have a hi-def 3D entertainment unit for our cats. Providing hours of entertainment, it always delivers the best in bird, squirrel, and chipmunk programming. Shows include:

  • How I Met Your Starling
  • Orange is the New Oriole
  • Big Beak Theory
  • Game of Crows
  • The Walking Wren
  • Breaking Birdfeeders (that’s a squirrel show)
  • The Real House Sparrows of New Jersey

Each cat has his or her preferred window, tuned to the programs each likes the best. For example, Athena’s favorite sport is birdwatching, so she’ll plant herself in front of the window that overlooks our birdfeeders. Occasionally there will be a squirrel or chipmunk substitution, which usually results in her offering yowly play-by-play commentary.

All photography and haiku by Susan C. Willett.

Elsa Clair enjoys the view from my bedroom, which overlooks the same area, but has the added advantage of height, so she can watch the birds hop from branch to branch in our large maple tree. Unfortunately, there’s no room service up there- Elsa Clair has complained to management about this. Several times.

During the summer, the programming changes slightly with more nighttime activity. Calvin and the rest of the kitties know the porch light attracts moths, which are fascinating to watch –- and even more exciting if one gets in the house by accident. When that happens, the poor creature has a life expectancy of about .237 seconds, unless I am able to rescue it first.

What are your cats’ favorite programs? Tell us in the comments — or better yet, write us a haiku!

About the author: Susan C. Willett is a writer, photographer, and blogger whose award-winning original stories, photography, poetry, and humor can be found at Life With Dogs and Cats. She lives in New Jersey with three dogs and four cats (all rescues) and at least a couple of humans — all of whom provide inspiration for her work. Refusing to take sides in the interweb’s dogs vs. cats debate, Susan enjoys observing the interspecies interaction among the varied inhabitants of her home — like living in a reality TV show, only furrier. In addition to Life With Dogs and Cats, you can find more Lilah, Jasper, and Tucker (and the rest of the gang) on Haiku by Dog™, Haiku by Cat™, and Dogs and Cats Texting.
