My favorite 8 faces cats make

Cats are such expressive beings who are endlessly entertaining. They think they’re being sly with their feelings, but they truly wear their opinions on their furry little sleeves. Come to think of it, maybe they want

us to know — in no uncertain terms — what they are thinking at any given moment. Who knows! We could ponder for the rest of our lives and never completely figure out the feline mind.

Whatever the case, cats’ furry facial expressions completely crack me up. Here are eight of my favorites.

1. Window wonder

Sometimes when I pull into my driveway, I see one of the cats sitting in a window, usually Phoebe. Her eyes widen like she can’t believe she’s actually seeing me — like it’s the most far-fetched, surprising vision she’s ever witnessed. Did she not expect me to return home? Her wide eyes follow my every move as I climb out of the car and gather any bags. As soon as I’m near the door, she disappears from the window and appears front and center as I enter the house. “It really is you!”

2. Peeky tongue

Sometimes when Cosmo cleans himself, he forgets to retract his little pink tongue, leaving what I call the “peeky tongue” look. His expression is incredibly serious all of the time, so the silly little slip of the tongue makes his look even more hysterical. Occasionally, peeky tongue will stay visible for several minutes. Friends, those are some of the best few minutes of my day — guaranteed.

3. Ready to race

Do you ever notice when you walk toward the kitchen, your cat gets that look? You know the one — like he fully expects and anticipates your trip to the kitchen involves retrieving something for him. His eyes slightly widen and he looks ready to race to meet your certain handful of delicious treats. Because everything we do is all about them.

4. Sleepy head

I love sleepy kitty faces. Especially when they fight sleep. Especially when they fight sleep while standing up. Especially when they start rocking back and forth and their head begins to drop. Seriously, there’s not much better entertainment.

5. Wild kitty

Kitties are such cutie pies and then, when they see prey, they become fierce wild cats! They lower their bodies and narrow their eyes. My Phoebe looks like a total cheetah about to pounce when she does this. Whether it’s a bug, a feather toy or your toes, their faces look 100 percent ferocious — and all kinds of adorable.

6. Lovey-love

You know when your cat is curled up, purring and looking at you with those eyes? Oh, those melt-your-heart eyes! You just know they are thinking about how much they love you and, I swear, I could sit and look into those eyes all day long. Please note: The eyes will immediately change if you decide to get up and walk toward the kitchen (see No. 3).

7. Wake up

Have you ever woken up to a face like the one in the photo above? Yeah, me too. It’s a face of irritation and impatience. It usually greets you when you’re trying to sleep in on the weekend and kitty decides he’s having none of it. This guilt-inducing face works, too — and kitty knows it. Nonetheless, it makes me smile.

8. Crankster

Cats flash cranky faces when they’re trying to convey a message — usually it’s something like “go away!” I regularly receive this look, especially when I pull out the camera to score a few pics. Although my cats want me to feel their disdain, I can’t help but laugh! I’m sure they hate that. Too bad.
