5 Reasons my cats think i’m completely bonkers

Because I work from home, my cats and I spend a lot of time together. They see me performing various job-related duties at my desk. They also see me exercise, eat, do chores and tons of other things. We spend nearly every waking hour together. Sometimes I wonder what they think when they see me engaged in certain activities. I mean, they totally get it when I’m eating, so much so that they hyperfocus on my food. I believe they understand when I’m sleeping — I mean, if anyone understand sleep, it’s cats, right?

There are a few activities, though, that I’m sure puzzle my cats. Here are five of them.

1. Working on the laptop

Every day Phoebe sits on my desk and watches me work. She sees me click little buttons on a machine that’s constantly changing screens and emits music. She watches as my cursor slides around the screen, and she is fascinated by the videos that play. And when the laptop is closed, it’s a great bed. To her, my laptop must be nothing short of a magical, musical entertainment center and bed.

2. Arriving home

My cats see me leave the house from time to time, and then later I suddenly appear again. Sometimes one of the cats is sitting in a front window and sees me drive up and park in front of the house. Their eyes widen and their gaze follows my every move until I approach the front door — then they zip out of the window and meet me at the door. I’m curious as to where they suppose I go, and what they think about that big, loud rolling monstrosity that brings me home. I’m fairly certain their curiosity wanes and their focus shifts to food as soon as I enter the house. You’re back. Cool. Feed me.

3. Talking on the phone

I’m not much of a phone talker, but do occasionally chat with my out-of-town friends and family. When this happens, my cats see and hear me speak into this little rectangular box. Sometimes I even fall into fits of laughter. Do they think I’m talking to myself? That I’ve finally gone off the deep end? I’ll never know, but the speculation sure is entertaining.

4. Reading a book

Cosmo generally joins me when I settle in to read a book. And he often watches me as he’s drifting off to sleep. Then he’ll wake up an hour later and I’m still staring at those paper pages. Now that I think of it, he stares at walls for hours- this is probably completely normal behavior to him.

5. Singing and dancing

I enjoy singing aloud and dancing, especially in the kitchen. The times when Cosmo will tolerate it, I’ll grab him for a few turns around the “dance floor.” His patience is usually short, and I place him back on the floor. What in the world is he thinking about this whole scenario? My human picks me up, hold me close to her body and then starts moving and bouncing around, and making music with her mouth. Yes, I bet this makes him think I’ve definitely gone off the deep end.
